DMK says firm no to Chiranjeevi party symbol

The Election Commission is referring to the DMK the request from Telugu mega star Chiranjeevi asking for the Rising Sun symbol for the party he is planning to announce on April 7, the Telugu new year day, according to informed sources. The DMK is expected to say no since the party has units in Andhra Pradesh. “I am not aware of any communication from the EC on Chiranjeevi’s request for Rising Sun. In any case, we have to say a firm no because the DMK has units in Andhra Pradesh and cannot afford to have problems when we put up our candidates in some elections there in the future,” said a DMK senior.

And of course in Andhra Pradesh, how can we allow our Rising Sun symbol, familiar in every household here since 1957, to be taken away by another party in these states?” he asked. After dilly-dallying for many years, despite reigning high in Tollywood, Chiranjeevi has now finally decided to launch into politics, causing huge expectations among his many fans and big excitement in the state political corridors. His native West Godavari district, particularly, seems to be on fire as the fan clubs are busier than ever recruiting members of the party-to-be-launched.

Some senior politicians too are said to be seriously considering switching to the star-party. Five-time TDP MLA from Chintalapudi in Chiranjeevi’s home district Rao has been keeping low profile for almost a year owing to differences with party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu. “True, I have some differences with my boss, but I have not yet made up my mind. I am talking to my followers and will soon announce my decision,” he said.

Asked about the rumors that he was contemplating joining Chiranjeevi’s party, Rao merely said there was huge excitement in his district, which also happens to be the star’s native district. “The people in my district are very eager.” Among those ‘excited’ in West Godavari is K. Janakiram, president of the star’s fan club and brother of former TD minister K. Subbarayudu. Several political leaders are engaged in conducting ‘political classes’ for the fan club members, sponsored by the Chiranjeevi Trust.
